I will be back on nights staring next week as I start workig for Hospice of the Comforter. It will be a 7p-7a position as I will be going to school on my free days. Any suggestions from those of you that have done shift work will be greatly appreciated

Depends on what exactly you will be doing. For me when I work nights I am working on stuff for upcoming films and short stories.

I take a two hour nap as late as possible the day before I start my night shifts. This gets me through the first night and then I'm set to a nocturnal schedule.
The last day of nights I sleep as little as I can stand, usually 3-4 hours, and then get up and pretend to be a day person. By that night, I'm flipped back to diurnal.
Drink lots of coffee.
Schedule all your nights in a row as much as possible. The less flipping, the better.
But you know all this!!!

I will be working for Hospice of The Comforter and from what I have seen they have been really busy and most of my patients will be passing away on my shift. Lots of charting (on the computer thankfully) but most of all lots of handholding and support for the families. I feel this is my "calling" since my dad passed 6 months ago and I actully took a $5 per/hr cut in pay.

That's awesome, bflick. I have always wanted to do something where I could really feel like I was making a difference. One day!

Thank you ;D I am sure everyone touches someones life everyday without even knowing it both positively and negatively. Last year was incredibly rough but I do see a light now.

The first night was rough. First patient passed around 2030. Then at about 2100 received a 39 year old man with cancer with multiple metastatic site including bone and brain. We were unable to acheive pain control throughout the shift which brought me to tears twice. At one point his mom looked at me and asked me how old my kids were and told me she wished I never had to go through this. This is going to be a very hard job indeed.

Yeah Kudo to you for doing it. I know I couldn't You would be surprised of what you could do if you had too. I am not too keen on a pediatric paient though and the unit does get patients belowthe age of 18 from time to time
