Since movies are an art form, why do we get so angry about remakes and not angry about people doing cover songs? Or do we?
I just listened to two shitty cover songs, and I apologize if you guys like them.
Imagine - Jack Johnson Give a Little Bit - The Goo Goo Dolls
They don't seem to "offend" us as much as when movies are remade badly.
Although I was highly offended at the Killswitch Engage cover of Holy Diver. I waited so long for someone to cover my beloved Dio, and this is the crap I get?

I actually get more offended by bad covers than I do movie remakes. Bands who remake peformers like Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Zepplin, Hendrix, and other bands I grew up with bother me. 311's cover of The Cure's Love Song pissed me off beyond all belief. Music is something that is very personal to me. There are only a few covers I can think of that I actually enjoy. I am actually a fan of a lot of the movie remakes, which has led to a few disagreements with some on the board in the last year. I dont mind if you remake a movie, but damn you if you ruin music that holds an emotional place in my soul

So music is more important to you than movies, while with some it is the other way. That makes sense to me. Some people may be more into paintings/drawings more so than music, as another example.

I'm with you mordrid. Bad covers are worse than bad remakes, especially because it's generally easy to just avoid seeing a version of a movie one doesn't want to see (e.g. Rob Z's Halloween) where cover songs often assail one unsolicited on radios in public places, etc.

It is all a matter of perception and importance due to background. For me, music was very central in my youth. I was surrounded by it. While I do love movies, esp horror, I find music to be my escape. So to me, someone doing a horrid cover of a song that has a special place for me is a lot more offensive.

I grew up watching Horror so I do take offense when a remake or reimagining is done, especially one that consider a favorite ( Halloween)

I get all pissed over covers when they're crappy. If you actually have something to say with a song that someone else wrote or if you just want to do a faithful and true version, that's fine. Just don't fuck it up.
What I really hate are the covers on remake soundtracks that are crappy versions of great songs done by "new" bands only because it promotes the new Teen Beat.

What I really hate are the covers on remake soundtracks that are crappy versions of great songs done by "new" bands only because it promotes the new Teen Beat. I hate when someone covers a cover song, and all the teeny boppers think it is an original song by the person who covered it rather than the original artist. Then when the original is played, they think the original is the cover.

Then when the original is played, they think the original is the cover. When David Bowie went back almost a decade in time and covered Bauhaus, though, you have to admit that was pretty cool!

I do completely agree that Social D's Ring of Fire kicks ass, and that is the exceptation to the rule when it comes to Johnny Cash covers. That American Idol gy who did I Walk the Line was the shitty cover I was thinking of when I mentioned Cash
