Ok I think this movie has changed my perseption on musicals. I fucking love this movie and fully endorse it. Anthony Head has such a magnificent voice! Sarah Brightman was a awesome choice too. Kudos to everyone involved in this movie. Definatly the RHPS of the 21st centery!!! So tell your thoughts. Seras and me have loved it so much we are going to try and put together Repo and Blind Mag costumes. Anyone else want to band in If anyone is willing to do Pavi I would be facinated.

Given that I don't care for modern musicals in general, I was very skeptical watching this.
And for good reason.
The "plot" of this story played second fiddle to the countless characters who the entire movie spent introducing, as well as their back stories. So much time was wasted telling all about who was in the movie, that the actual story seemed to be an afterthought. As such, I found it difficult to actually care for any of the characters in the movie.
The music was well done, but the singing was mediocre at best, except for those who were trained in operatic singing (such as Sarah Brightman).
The entire movie reeked of the Leo DeCaprio and Claire Danes flick "Romeo and Juliet" (which also starred Paul Sorvino). Couple that with the obvious touch that the producers of the Saw franchise put on it, and you have a disjointed mish mash of.....stuff. When the actors (other than the "Graverobber" narrator) break the fourth wall in an opera, you know there's something seriously wrong.
I tend to agree with Universal Pictures, who offered to bankroll Repo!, but only if it were done as a straight film rather than an opera. The story line is a good one, and has a lot of potential that this movie clearly missed. The whole "reposession" aspect of the movie was barely mentioned. I can only hope that Repossession Mambo, which has the same basic story line as Repo! will be a whole lot better.
Just as the Saw franchise is more of a "mystery" type movie, this movie can barely qualify as horror, and carries the same elements of "horror" with it, which generally ends up being "gross out" shots.
I was hoping I was wrong. I really was. I want my hour and 40 minutes back.

Given that I don't care for modern musicals in general, I was very skeptical watching this. etc... Very well done review, but your reference to the Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet betrays much. Now that you've both panned it and put it in the same camp with that film, I even more thoroughly expect to love Repo! ;D

Given that I don't care for modern musicals in general.../quote] Does this mean you like opera/operetta? What are the older forms of musical theatre that you do like?

Does this mean you like opera/operetta? I saw Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon in Chicago, and loved them both. Stuff like "The Sound of Music", "The Music Man", and things of that nature. I didn't care all that much for Rocky Horror Picture Show, but it was certainly a lot better than Repo. I think it could have possibly worked as a rock opera, but like I said - the actual plot took second fiddle to character introduction. That's why I'd like to see it as a straight film that focuses on the idea of organ reposession.

Thank you! I would have termed Music Man, etc. "modern" along with all forms dating at least to 1900 or so. The visual presentation of most musical theater really hasn't changed that much since its development (opera and prior): Make the biggest, boldest, most sweeping spectacle you can manage! Things like Cabaret and Einstein on the Beach take a different approach. I remember you mentioning you weren't in love with Cabaret. How do you feel about Philip Glass?

... Definatly the RHPS of the 21st centery!!! This film is definitely headed directly for cult status. Obviously, the costuming aspects of RHPS will be there, but I wonder if it has the same space for audience participation. Has it been out long enough for participation culture to begin to form? Do you have any info on that? Mr. and I would certainly be more than willing to host you guys for the night over this way if something like this turns up between WPB and Ft. Lauderdale. Our sitter could easily handle the girls plus Jazmin for an overnight date! ...Seras and me have loved it so much we are going to try and put together Repo and Blind Mag costumes. Anyone else want to band in If anyone is willing to do Pavi I would be facinated. I am always LARPing as "Mrs. Artemis Shreck" so it is very hard for me to give that over completely to a character someone else created. (Good grief, Malice, I have such a big ego. Thanks for loving me anyway!) At any rate, I'm sure some of the visual aspects of this film will be regurgitated in some aspect of my personal costumery in the near future. As to you guys, let me know if you need any help. I have a machine and a serger. I'm always short on time when the snowbirds are here (I work more), but will have more time off in the summer. You guys could come over and the kids could play while we costume!
